I’m no stranger to meal delivery services. They’re a convenient way to get high-quality meat and produce into our busy schedule. I’ve used ButcherBox a few times and really love the diverse range of high-quality beef, pork, poultry, and seafood available. It’s one of the few services that provide all of your essential meats in a single subscription.
As the ultimate carnivore, I wanted to share my hands-on experiences with ButcherBox’s meat delivery service.
What Is ButcherBox?
ButcherBox is a meat delivery service that provides 100% grass-fed beef, free-range organic chicken, heritage-breed pork, and wild-caught seafood directly to your doorstep. They source their meats from trusted providers around the world to ensure the highest quality. You can read more about it here.
ButcherBox offers a diverse range of beef cuts including everything from ground beef to filet mignon. If you’re not a big red meat eater, you can also choose from popular cuts of chicken and pork. And how could I possibly forget the salmon, scallops, lobster tails, and cod? It’s worth noting that all of these items are subject to availability, so you may have more options some months than others.
The only thing ButcherBox is NOT is a complete meal delivery service. They supply the meat, you come up with your own recipes—luckily I’ve got you covered there.
How Does ButcherBox Work?
Go to butcherbox.com and choose your plan. They offer 4 different curated bundles and a custom box option which allows you to choose whatever you would like (more on this later). After you select your box type, you can choose from two different box sizes (classic or big box), followed by the delivery frequency (which is every 2,4,6, or 8 weeks).
If you choose a custom box, you’ll select your items from a gallery of assorted cuts and may choose exactly what you would like with a click of a button. It’s really easy.
Regardless of the box-type you pick, you’ll automatically receive a monthly shipment that is tightly packaged in an insulated box and delivered to your doorstep free of charge. All meat arrives individually packaged and very frozen so you can throw it right in your freezer for later use.
Butcher Box Plans
- Custom Box: Anything ButcherBox offers, handpicked by you.
- Mixed Box: An array of various cuts of chicken, beef, pork, and seafood each month.
- Beef and Chicken Box: An assortment of various cuts of chicken and beef.
- Beef and Pork Box: An assortment of various cuts of beef and pork.
- All Beef Box: For red meat lovers—various cuts of beef only.
With the exception of a custom box, your items in each box will vary each month and will be automatically selected for you. Yes, you cannot pick what’s in each box but you will have the option to add various add-ons to your box for an extra fee if you’re looking for something particular.
If you want complete control over your box, the custom box allows you to pick and choose what you would like as long as you make any adjustments before your next billing date. You can also change your box type and the delivery frequency at any time. This flexibility is really nice as you’re not committed to any single plan or set numbers of deliveries.
My latest custom box consisted of 2 grass-fed filet mignon, 2 packs of applewood smoked bacon, pork tenderloin, St. Louis style ribs, a bag of sea scallops, ground beef, and individual portions of sockeye salmon.
If you go a similar route as me, I’ve put together some meal inspiration for you!
- Bacon-wrapped scallops
- Blue-cheese stuffed burgers
- Lemon butter scallops over risotto
- Bacon-wrapped filet mignon
- Beer-battered cod/haddock

Why I Chose ButcherBox
I love ButcherBox because of the quality and convenience. Custom boxes are great if you’re someone like me who is particular about what you want or are looking for specific cuts each month. Like I said, you can customize EACH delivery or get the exact same custom box every time.
Curated boxes are nice if you don’t want to think about picking your items and are more willing to be creative with what you receive. And when I mean creative, I don’t mean you’re going to get a surprise delivery of chicken livers… You’re always going to get delicious and popular cuts.
We don’t have an extra deep freezer at our house so it’s nice to use ButcherBox as an on-demand freezer that replenishes when I need to.
Most importantly, I trust the quality of the meat I’m receiving from ButcherBox. I usually judge any brand by the quality of their filet mignon. It’s one of my favorite cuts of beef, I have a lot of experience preparing it. There’s no hiding bad filet mignon. ButcherBox filets are grass-fed, so they cook a little faster than your typical steak and have an amazing texture and flavor.
I recently grilled my bacon-wrapped filet mignon using ButcherBox‘s bacon and filets and it was truly a high-end steak house meal.
Pricing
As of writing this article, pricing varies based on the type of box and box size. All classic curated boxes are $129 per delivery (8-11 lbs) while custom classic boxes are $149 per delivery (9-14 lbs). Big boxes are $238 per delivery (16-22 lbs) and $270 for a custom box (18-26lbs).
This all averages out to about $13 per pound of meat. While it’s certainly not cheap, I think this is pretty fair given the premium quality, free delivery, convenience factor, and the variety of items in each box. $13 per pound may be pricy for regular ground beef but not for grass-fed filet mignon, scallops, or grass-fed ground beef for that matter. There’s a big difference, and I’ve really gotten used to it in my cooking.
ButcherBox is always running deals and promos so keep an eye out for opportunities to score some freebies in your box! If you follow any of the links in this post you’ll see the latest special signup bonus if one is currently running.
I highly encourage you to give it a shot!
